Engraving, Duke of Devonshire
Engraving, Duke of Devonshire
Claude Gelee, also known as Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), was a leading artist in the Italian school of landscape painting. His harbor scenes and views of the Roman countryside had a lasting influence on landscape artists for centuries to come. In the late 1700’s, during the Romantic period of art, his drawings and paintings were made into sepia toned mezzotint engravings. They are all beautifully executed and rare. This print was engraved by the great artist Richard Earlom who specialized in the art of mezzotint and was published by the equally famous J. Boydell. The print is in good condition with very minor foxing
