A. Aubrey Bodine (1906-1970)

Bird's Eye View of Baltimore c. 1965

Gelatin Silverprint Photograph

This original photograph by the American genre photographer, A. Aubrey Bodine, is signed in ink at the bottom right corner. The photo depicts a view of the Baltimore skyline highlighting the historic Belvedere Grand Condominium to the left as it towers over the rest of the city. On the reverse, the photo is stamped "Photograph & Printed by A. Aubrey Bodine, Hon F.P.S.A.,F.N.P.P. Image # 27-128". The beautiful scene showcases Bodine's mastery over light and shadow as well as his love of the city of Baltimore.

A. Aubrey Bodine was a force in the pictorial photojournalism world. Born in 1906 in Baltimore, Maryland, his photography career began in the 1920s. He worked as a photojournalist at the Baltimore Sunday Sun capturing events and life as they appeared. Bodine's focus on post-war Mid-Atlantic America covered topics relating to the life of the American at the time including occupations, cities, ports, politics, and more. Looking for an additional outlet for his work, Bodine co-chartered the reorganization of the Photographic Society of America, an influential umbrella group that sponsored camera clubs around the US and abroad. In 1965 Bodine was named an Honorary Fellow of the Photographic Society of America, a rare honor given to very few over the years and is shared by other monumental figures in photography such as Alfred Stieglitz. In the 1950s Bodine began showing abroad, gaining more and more recognition for his work that doubled as journalistic endeavors and artwork to be showcased in salons. As his health declined in the 1960s, so did his energy to showcase his artwork. In 1970, he suffered a fatal stroke in his darkroom and passed away. His work, however, persists and his enchanting combination of pictorialism and "straight" photography continues to capture the wonder of those today.
