Hand-painted Engraving

A singular, large circular cameo depicting a winged, youthful figure draped in classical attire anchors the center of this 18th-century hand-colored copperplate engraving. Set against a deep, contrasting matte-black field, the portrait represents a young Cupid or Bacchus figure adorned with grape clusters and vine leaves woven into his blonde hair. The delicate, translucent watercolor washes highlight the soft flesh tones of the subject against a cool blue background, all enclosed within a thick, gilded circular border that simulates a heavy luxury frame. Beneath the focal medallion, a faux stone banner bears the Latin inscription "INSCULPTUM AMETHYSTO EX MUSEO VICTORIO", identifying the original source object as an ancient amethyst intaglio from the renowned collection of Francesco Vettori. The lower margins attribute the print's production to the original Italian draftsperson Giovanni Domenico Campiglia on the left ("Io. Dominicus Campiglia del.") and the engraver Pietro Martini on the right ("Petrus Marini sculp.").

This engraving, produced during the height of the Rococo period, reflects a deep-seated scholarly and decorative interest in the 'antik' (antiquity), particularly classical gem-carving. Campiglia was an Italian engraver and painter known for his skill in translating sculpture and architectural subjects into two-dimensional prints. He often worked on illustrations for substantial, scientific-leaning publications. Such hand-painted engravings were prized for their ability to bring a sense of colored relief and 'authentic' antiquity into European collections, offering a more accessible version of genuine carved gems.
