This refined 1727 hand-painted engraving, created by Giovanni Domenico Campiglia depicts a collection of five detailed classical subjects arranged against a dark, contrasting field. Each subject is framed in a gilded oval, imitating the form of a carved gemstone cameo. The composition is anchored at the top by a central vignette, a cherub flanked by winged angels (or Victoriae). The remaining four oval cameos are arranged below in pairs. They depict muscular classical male figures, four of which appear nude or in minimal classical drapery. Each male subject is in a different active or contemplative pose, engaging with artifacts or the natural world, such as a helmeted soldier with a shield, another seated with a helmet, a figure with a rod, and a figure with a bow and hound. The work demonstrates remarkable detail in capturing the textures of stone and flesh, as well as an exquisite control of line typical of master engraving.
