Hand-painted Engraving

An elegant, elongated oval cameo depicting a veiled female figure standing beside a classical column anchors the top register of this 18th-century hand-colored copperplate engraving. Arranged against a rich, solid matte-black field, the composition displays five distinct classical gemstone vignettes framed in heavy, gilded borders that mimic luxury relief carvings. The upper focal piece represents a vestal virgin or goddess carrying a sacred vessel, identified by the lower text banner as an agate-sardonyx carving from the Medici collection ("Insculp. Achat-Sard. ex Museo Mediceo"). Below this top piece, two pairs of oval cameos showcase dynamic mythological and architectural subjects, including figures positioned inside classical temple structures, a satyr before an altar, and a winged male deity holding a caduceus or staff. The bottom margins document the artistic collaboration behind the print, attributing the original drawing to the Italian draftsperson Giovanni Domenico Campiglia on the left ("I. D. C. del.") and the mechanical line work to the engraver Vincenzo Franceschini on the right ("V. F. scul.")

This engraving, produced during the height of the Rococo period, reflects a deep-seated scholarly and decorative interest in the 'antik' (antiquity), particularly classical gem-carving. Campiglia was an Italian engraver and painter known for his skill in translating sculpture and architectural subjects into two-dimensional prints. He often worked on illustrations for substantial, scientific-leaning publications.
