Joseph Mallord William Turner

Crossing the Brook

c. 1859

Line Engraving on India paper

This original line engraving after the celebrated British painter Joseph Mallord William Turner, titled Crossing the Brook, was engraved by William Richardson in 1859. The scene depicts a view towards Plymouth down the Tamar valley.  He produced it based on sketches he had made during a trip to Devon in 1813. The landscape composition was additionally inspired by 17th century classical style of French painter Claude Lorrain. The ideal classical landscape is typically characterized by harmony, balance, and an idealized vision of nature shaped by the principles of Classical antiquity and the Renaissance. Rather than depicting a purely realistic scene, artists composed landscapes to evoke order, beauty, and tranquility. In this image, Turner gave the English countryside an Italianate look. The oil painting Crossing the Brook was displayed at the Royal Academy Exhibition of 1815 at Somerset House along with Dido building Carthage.

Joseph Mallord William Turner was one of the most celebrated artists of the English Romantic movement. Known as “the painter of light,” he became renowned for his luminous use of color and atmosphere in landscapes and seascapes. His body of work includes watercolors, oil paintings, and engravings that showcase his innovative vision of the natural world. His engravings, particularly those produced in collaboration with master printmakers such as Cooke, helped disseminate his imagery to a wider audience and solidified his reputation internationally. Today, Turner’s works remain among the most celebrated achievements in nineteenth-century European art.

Condition: Overall very good condition. The engraving displays strong impressions and clear detail throughout. Minor age-related toning and wear consistent with the period may be present. One pin sized puncture in the blank space beneath the image.

Dimensions: H 10 3/4" x 8 1/8" W
