Joseph Mallord William Turner or J.M.W. Turner
Petworth Park c. 1859
Line Engraving on India paper
This original line engraving after the celebrated British painter J. M. W. Turner, titled Petworth Park, was published by D. Appleton & Company in New York, likely around 1859. Derived from a watercolor Turner executed circa 1829, the composition reflects the artist’s masterful handling of atmosphere, movement, and light, hallmarks of his enduring fascination with the natural landscape. Turner was a frequent guest at Petworth House through his close friendship with George O'Brien Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751–1837), who commissioned a series of views of the estate and its surrounding parkland. The landscape depicted in this work could be seen directly from the windows of Petworth House itself, and four of Turner’s Petworth scenes remain installed in the locations originally chosen by Turner and the Earl following a major restoration project completed in the early 2000s.
Joseph Mallord William Turner was one of the most celebrated artists of the English Romantic movement. Known as “the painter of light,” he became renowned for his luminous use of color and atmosphere in landscapes and seascapes. His body of work includes watercolors, oil paintings, and engravings that showcase his innovative vision of the natural world. His engravings, particularly those produced in collaboration with master printmakers such as Cooke, helped disseminate his imagery to a wider audience and solidified his reputation internationally. Today, Turner’s works remain among the most celebrated achievements in nineteenth-century European art.
Condition: Overall very good condition. The engraving displays strong impressions and clear detail throughout. Minor age-related toning and wear consistent with the period may be present. No notable damage observed.
