The Sun Rising In a Mist c. 1862
Line Engraving on India paper
This original line engraving, The Sun Rising in a Mist, after the celebrated British painter J. M. W. Turner, was engraved by J.C. Armytage in 1862. The original oil painting, first exhibited in 1807, marked a notable departure from Turner’s earlier dramatic seascapes, instead presenting a tranquil study of calm waters and diffused atmospheric light. The composition’s boats and figures reflect the influence of Dutch marine painting, an inspiration later acknowledged when the work was exhibited in Turner’s own gallery in 1810 under the title Dutch Boats.
Joseph Mallord William Turner was one of the most celebrated artists of the English Romantic movement. Known as “the painter of light,” he became renowned for his luminous use of color and atmosphere in landscapes and seascapes. His body of work includes watercolors, oil paintings, and engravings that showcase his innovative vision of the natural world. His engravings, particularly those produced in collaboration with master printmakers such as Cooke, helped disseminate his imagery to a wider audience and solidified his reputation internationally. Today, Turner’s works remain among the most celebrated achievements in nineteenth-century European art.
Condition: Overall very good condition. The engraving displays strong impressions and clear detail throughout. Minor age-related toning and wear consistent with the period may be present. One pin sized puncture in the blank space beneath the image.
