This original line engraving after the celebrated British painter Joseph Mallord William Turner, titled The Vale of Heathfield, was engraved by William Bernard Cooke and published as part of the renowned series Views in Sussex circa 1820. The scene depicts a wooded and hilly Sussex landscape with a grand country house resting in a clearing at mid-distance. Originally executed as a watercolor by Turner around 1815, the composition masterfully balances atmosphere, movement, and light, exemplifying the artist’s enduring fascination with the natural landscape. The engraving is presented on paper and showcases the refined linear detail characteristic of Cooke’s engraving technique. The series was intended to celebrate the picturesque scenery of East Sussex through finely executed engravings after Turner’s watercolors.
