Etching Engraving of Astrantia Alpina, Abraham Munting, 1696
Etching Engraving of Astrantia Alpina, Abraham Munting, 1696
Astrantia Alpina
C. 1696
This piece is a black and white etching engraving of a plant species from the Netherland region.
Abraham Munting (1626-1683) was the son of Henricus Munting, Dutch botanist, and a renowned botanical artist. Abraham Munting's best known work, Naawkeurige Beschryving Der Aardgewassen was published in 1696 after his death. Later, Waare Oeffening de Planten, was recreated as an improved version of Munting's earlier editions. Venturing beyond the traditional botanical illustrations of its era, Munting's work has long been beloved and celebrated. In his drawings, plant species were depicted against classical or pastoral landscapes, often floating in mid-air with little regard for perspective and relative sizes. Once Abraham Munting passed in 1683, his son Albert Munting took over the running of Hortus Botanicus Groninganus, continuing the now-family trade.
Condition: Overall the art piece is in very good condition. Toning as expected due to age. Mild foxing throughout the art piece. Chipping along the bottom of the paper causing minor edge damage. Light acidic matting on the left side of the etching. Overall paper is healthy and colors are vibrant.
