Each piece in this collection is a landscape engraving created by Claude Lorrain, engraved by Richard Earlom, and published by John Boydell showcasing different perspectives of nature throughout London, such as towns, hillsides, and seashores.
Claude Lorrain, also known as Claude Gellee, was a French artist best recognized for artistry in "ideal landscape painting" (idealistic perspective of nature's true beauty). Lorrain often attributed his inspirations to classical concepts of Rome's countryside. Training under the well-respected Agostino Tassi, Lorrain's talent in landscape painting flourished throughout his career. His first known artwork is Landscape with Cattle and Peasants, painted in 1629. Lorrain is renowned for his perspective showcasing the conditions nature, views of the sun as it reflects on seawater and rivers from dawn to dusk.
