Maud Humphrey created this delightful 1902 color print, titled "Hot Cross Buns," as an antique book plate illustration celebrating classic nursery rhyme literature. Holding a small wicker basket filled with fresh buns, the child raises one hand to their cheek while calling out the traditional street cry. The text of the rhyme is scripted in a decorative font to the left, adorned with a stylized pink initial letter, while a delicate stem of pale yellow pansies arches across the upper left corner. Humphrey’s signature initials are visible in the lower-right corner, anchoring a minimalist composition defined by fine line work, soft watercolor tints, and an open, airy background.
