Capturing a moment of dramatic kinetic energy, this vibrant mid-1930s color-lithographed linen print brings to life the chaotic climax of the classic nursery rhyme Jack and Jill. Created around 1934 by celebrated American artist Fern Bisel Peat, the diagonal composition freezes the two children mid-tumble down a steep, grassy green hillside dotted with small white daisies. Jack dominates the foreground, splayed out upside down in a bright red tunic and patched green trousers with a wooden water bucket comically overturned right onto his head. Higher up the incline, Jill slides backward in a blue striped coat and yellow dress, her arms outstretched and ribbons flying as a stone water well recedes into the background. By pressing these bold, clean Art Deco curves onto a heavily textured linen surface, Peat infused the iconic accident with a delightful tactile dimension that was both physically durable and visually entertaining for a child’s room.

This print was originally created as a full-page illustration for a collectible, linenette edition of Mother Goose nursery rhymes, a medium heavily popularized during the Great Depression for its durability and safety in nurseries. Fern Bisel Peat (1893–1971) was a highly influential Ohio-based artist who revolutionized children's decorative arts in the 1920s and 1930s through her work with the Saalfield Publishing Company, her custom children's wallpaper lines, and her innovative wooden toy designs. This piece exemplifies the "Golden Age" of American children's book illustration, showcasing how commercial publishers elevated nursery decor into high-quality graphic art that helped define the visual culture of early 20th-century American childhood.
