Hand Colored Engraving

Featured in Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s seminal botanical catalog, Phytanthoza Iconographia, this vibrant hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts two distinct species of aconite (monkshood). On the left there are deep blue helmet-shaped blossoms over dark green, deeply lobed leaves, labeled above as ACONITUM Napellus. L. 4. To the right, there is a tall spike of bright yellow flowers with finely divided foliage, labeled ACONITUM Anthora. L. 7. Below the plate mark, engraved Latin and German captions identify both specimens as a. Aconithum Cœruleum majus. and b. Aconithum Salutiferum seu Anthora Antholle. Gifftheil.

Plate number N. 22 appears at the upper right corner, with Linnaean annotations added at the top of each stem. The image showcases Weinmann's characteristic combination of early mezzotint color printing enhanced by detailed hand-application of vivid cobalt blue and canary yellow pigments.
