Hand Colored Engraving

A fine hand-colored copperplate engraving from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s groundbreaking botanical encyclopedia, Phytanthoza Iconographia, illustrating five distinct varieties of mint and calamint. The compositions are detailed with delicate stem networks, whorled serrated foliage, and pale pink to magenta labiate flowers, key-lettered (a through e) throughout the plate. Below the image, engraved botanical captions list each specimen in Latin and German, beginning with a. Calamintha Agrestis, Acker-Münz.

Engraved at the upper right with plate number N. 289, the print features pre-Linnaean descriptive botanical nomenclature alongside traditional vernacular German names. Rendered in muted sage and forest green tones with soft pink floral details, produced using Weinmann’s pioneering color printing technique finished by hand.
