Hand Colored Engraving
This exquisite copperplate engraving from Pierre-Joseph Buc’hoz’s multi-volume work, Histoire universelle du règne végétal, presents a detailed branching stem of Arabian jasmine based on original illustrations from Georg Eberhard Rumphius’s Herbarium Amboinense. The main study depicts lush, paired ovate leaves with prominent veining and clusters of delicate white blossoms at the terminal branch tips. A smaller detail marked A at the lower right illustrates a single double-flowered blossom flanked by leaves. The lower left corner features an engraved caption reading: Flos manorae. Rumph. 5. p. 55. T. 30. Jasminum Arabicum foliis limonii conjugatis flore albo pleno odoratissimo. Boer. Ind. H.L. Dat. Jasmin d'Arabie à fleurs doubles.
Engraved at the upper margin with Pl. VI (left) and Decad. 7 (right), and at the lower right corner Cent. 3., the print incorporates historical Latin taxonomy alongside French vernacular naming (Jasmin d'Arabie à fleurs doubles). Rendered in rich forest green and teal tones with bright white floral highlights and subtle hand-coloring.
