Sir William Charles Ross

c.1800s

Engraving

This 1841 line engraving captures a sophisticated three-quarter-length portrait of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He stands with poise, resting his left hand on a leather-bound book atop an armchair, while his right hand tucks into his dark evening coat, showcasing a prominent star and ceremonial order on his chest. The intricate linework highlights the textures of his clothing, his neatly styled hair, and a slight mustache, all rendered against a softly shaded, tonal background that hints at a regal interior with a draped curtain and a crown resting nearby. The original composition was painted by Sir William Charles Ross, a prominent British artist famed for his high-profile royal miniatures. This particular print was carefully translated into a steel plate engraving by the skilled printmaker William Holl.

The engraving carries immense historical and cultural significance as it was produced shortly after Prince Albert's high-profile marriage to Queen Victoria in 1840. During this era, printmaking served as the primary mechanism for distributing the likenesses of public figures to the masses. This work allowed the British public to familiarize themselves with the foreign-born Prince Consort, casting him as a modern, cultured gentleman. The artist, Sir William Charles Ross, enjoyed immense favor from the Crown and was appointed Miniature Painter to the Queen in 1837, making his portraits highly authoritative and favored by the royal family. Printmaker William Holl belonged to a noted family of stipple and line engravers. His masterful translation of Ross's work into print helped immortalize an idealized image of Albert at a critical moment when he was beginning to reshape the British monarchy, introduce industrial innovation via the Great Exhibition, and deeply impact public life.

Dimensions: H 10 3/4" x 8 1/8" W
