Hoffmann’s classic story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The left foreground features an ornate open book resting on stacked leather volumes, upon which the brave Nutcracker soldier brandishes his sword against a giant, creeping mouse. The broader surreal landscape expands into a chaotic battlefield of battling toy soldiers, mounted mice cavalry, and castle ramparts, all overseen by the ethereal, monumental visage of a beautiful woman in eighteenth-century courtly attire, complete with powdered curls, pearls, and a flower-trimmed bonnet.
