The ancient Greek hero and chthonic oracle Trophonius is depicted in a full-length portrait at the center of this 18th-century black-and-white copperplate engraving. Titled "TROPHONIUS" along the lower margin, the print portrays the muscular, bearded figure draped in minimal classical robes and wearing high laced sandals. According to classical lore, Trophonius was a legendary architect who built Apollo's temple at Delphi before being transformed into a prophetic deity whose subterranean oracle was traditionally discovered by following a swarm of bees. Visually capturing this myth, he holds a domed beehive aloft in his left hand as bees swarm outward, while a large bird perched on a branch hovers over his right shoulder. He stands beside a stone pedestal overflowing with fruits and grains above a decorative ceramic ewer, all enclosed within a highly ornate border of repeating grapevine and ivy leaf scrolls. The lower margins credit the production to the draftsperson Santi Pacini on the left ("Sanctes Pacini del.") and the engraver Innocente Alessandri on the right ("Innocens Alessandri sc.").

This engraving reflects the profound 18th-century European fascination with classical antiquity and the visual reconstruction of ancient literary figures.
